By Dave Scutt, Mason Fire Chief
On
Sunday, September 11, 2005, firefighters and residents alike
marked the fourth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist
attacks with "Mason Cares".
This annual event brought over 100 residents and firefighters
into the Chief James M. Pelton Memorial Fire Station. These
volunteers worked at everything from washing and waxing fire
trucks and police vehicles to painting and cleaning around the
police and fire stations.
The event is made possible through the efforts of Colleen
Briggs and Dana Ferguson of Dart Bank who have volunteered to
organize it every year. Without their many hours of hard work,
Mason Cares would not have been the success it has become.
Many businesses and residents around the community donate not
only time but money, food, and materials needed to make this
project work. Money that has not been used for supplies is donated
to the Mason Firefighters Association for the purchase of
equipment. Last year the association was able to purchase video
equipment and a digital camera. This year, donations will go
toward the purchase of extrication gloves and safety glasses for
department members.
A memorial service was held at the Courthouse at 6:00 pm. Among
the dignitaries who spoke at this solemn event were retired
Lansing Assistant Fire Chief Charles Booth, a former Mason
firefighter and fire science instructor at Lansing Community
College. All guest speakers reminded those in attendance of the
sacrifices made on September 11, 2005.
We will never forget.
