Sewer lines need to be cleaned on a regular schedule. The City of Mason cleans half of the City each year. (East Side on even years and West Side on odd years) This takes several weeks to complete. The City will provide a
Public Notice for updates on the areas that will be cleaned so residents know when staff will be in their area.
What to Expect
Cleaning of the sewers will sometimes cause toilets or drains to gurgle or water to splash out of toilets. Sewer lines can develop air pressure or a partial vacuum from the cleaning process. Usually, any excess air pressure or vacuum will dissipate through the plumbing vents of a home or building. Occasionally, there are homes or buildings with inadequate vents (no vents, undersized vents, or obstructed vents). In cases of inadequate venting, air pressure could escape through toilets, floor drains, and/or tub or shower drains causing water to splash out or a vacuum could draw the water out of plumbing traps causing an unpleasant odor. If you experience an unpleasant odor, run water into each drain to refill plumbing traps.
To guard against adverse effects, please consider:
- Covering floor drains with plastic and place a weight on the plastic.
- Covering all toilets with plastic, close the lid on the plastic, and place weight on the closed lid.
